I’ve been watching the developments on bisphenol A (BPA) when I read that a US lawsuit was filed against Playtex Products Inc. by a certain Ashley Campbell. As reported in the news, the lawsuit seeks nationwide (US) class action status to represent what it says are thousands of people who bought plastic bottles containing the chemical from Playtex or other companies. According to the lawsuit, Playtex has failed to adequately disclose that its plastic bottle products are formulated using the chemical. It seeks damages to be determined at trial and a finding that the company violated the law. Campbell says she bought Playtex’s plastic bottles unaware that they were formulated with or contained BPA.
A spokeswoman for Playtex, said the company does not comment on pending lawsuits. She cited a general statement by the company about BPA that says U.S. and worldwide regulatory bodies continue to deem the ingredient safe.
This is one lawsuit I fully support. As a parent of a two year old who used these bottles, there are many questions I would like to hear answered. I hope the lawsuit will help raise the quality of products being offered to children and shed light on a lot of things. Were there tests done by manufacturers to determine the safety of chemicals they include in their products? Do manufacturers know the harmful effects of the chemicals on children and yet didn’t disclose them? There is still confusion on this issue. The US hasn’t outright banned the bottles yet although it said that a possible effect cannot be dismissed.
If you are a parent like me, call your congressman and ask for answers.
