Music world icon and political activist, Bono, frontman of legendary rock band U2, recently made a statement that a United States of Africa "would be the dream" in the long term. "I think a kind of broader African identity is going to be very important to deal with tribal tensions". Bono was quoted on an interview with Asahi Shimbun of Japan.
For music fans all over, the rock band, U2, is one of the best bands in the world. Their music has consistently top the charts and are probably one of most downloaded 80’s band today. MP3 downloads of their songs (both legal and illegal) flood the Internet as a lot of the newer generation of music fans get to become familiar with U2’s music. With the rising popularity of Apple’s IPOD and similar gadgets, MP3 downloads are becoming more and more pervasive. I’ve even seen MP3 ringtones of U2’s songs for download online. I’ve never used ringtones download on my cellphone. Although, it seems that for teenagers and their generation, ringtones are incredibly popular.
Hearing the news on Bono, reminded me of one of my favorite U2 songs of all time, "One". "One" was the third single of their album, Achtung Baby. It was released in the 90’s and is generally considered one of their best song. For me, it’s up there with their other songs like, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "With or Without You". I remember listening to their songs back then. How time fly so fast? I’ve always like how U2 combines great music and grandiose statements about politics and religion.
Bono, in his other role as a political activist, has called for the creation of a United States of Africa. It certainly is a "dream" in the time being.
