Zhao Danyang, a Chinese investment fund manager from Hong Kong-based Pureheart China Growth Investment Fund won the auction Friday evening to have lunch with the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett. The $2.1 million bid is the most expensive charity auction ever held on eBay. Last year’s lunch auction on Ebay brought in $650,100.

Is this real?
Is it just me? $2.1M for a lunch? Don’t get me wrong. I would also like to have lunch with Warren Buffett. I think everyone who has read financial news or thought about their savings or investments recognize the legendary Warren Buffett. But, to pay $2.1M for a lunch, it seems to me is not a wise investment. Is this a hoax? Maybe, perpetuated by a Chinese hacker somewhere using the name of Mr. Zhao Danyang? I don’t really get it. Why would an investment manager shell out that amount? Will he get a return on his investment on this one? Maybe, he can get Warren Buffett to autograph some stuff that he can later on sell or auction them. Collectively, they may fetch a higher price than the $2.1M he paid. Maybe, he’s got a business in China that he’d like Warren Buffett to buy or invest in. If this is the case, he could have just phoned Warren and talk to him for a meeting. Maybe, he’s just awashed with cash. Probably.

I wish Mr. Zhao Danyang the best lunch ever. At $2.1M, he deserve a :) lunch buffet with Buffett . I just hope that Mr. Danyang gave a bigger donation for the victims of the recent Chinese earthquake. If it is just me, I would have rather donated that cash to the earthquake victims rather than buying lunch for somebody else.

I find it a big waste of money. If I were him, I’d rather visit Warren at his office in Omaha. Pitch some possible investment and go from there.

I would rather see him give those money to victims of the China Earthquake.

Warren Buffett is probably his idol. Paying $2.1 million is probably peanuts for him. I’m sure he can recoup that quickly.

What? 2.1M for lunch? That’s a lot of dimsum in a Chinese restaurant. What is he thinking?

What do you care? It’s his money. He can do however he please.

FYI: The money paid for this lunch does NOT go to Mr. Buffett. If all goes to charity, the Glide Foundation. So he is really giving to charity and getting a lunch with Buffett in addition to that. Many people donate to charity and don’t get such a benefit.

@Michael - I know its his money. Just blogging my thoughts.

@Mariya - Yes. I understand but if he’s Chinese and his country just had a major disaster. I think it is more prudent that he give the money to a Chinese charity. I just hope he gave a bigger amount to the earthquake victims. Well, he probably might have.
